The “Campesino Defiende Con Armas Al Gobierno Que Te Dio La Tierra” was a Communist or Republican poster published during the Spanish Civil War. Its direct translation means “Farmer defend with arms the government that gave you the land”.
Here the Republican side is directly recruiting farmers to join their army and help them fight against General Franco’s fascist cause. The Republicans were a disorganised army, primarily made of volunteers that were both local and international, such as those who were part of the International Brigade.
This poster was designed by Josep Renau who was an active member of the communist party and designed much of their propaganda during the war. Another one of his famous posters is the “Victoria – Hoy mas que nunca” poster, meaning today more than ever.
