The “Espana una grande libre” meaning “One Spain great and free” was Franco’s motto during the Spanish Civil War.
General Franco and his fascist movement were focused on building a united Spain, whereas the Republican movement which was comprised of anarchists, communists and other leftist parties wanted more autonomy for the various regions such as a Catalonia and the Basque country. During the conflict both sides fought over the hearts and minds of the people using various propaganda scare tactics in the form of posters and radio.
This “Espana una grande libre” depicts a nationalist soldier standing above a over weight republican soldier who is depicted with devils horns. He is painted in the blood of various leftist parties such as the C.N.T and the F.A.I, these had there own posters which can be seen in the Spanish Republican(Communist) Poster section.
