The “Food is Ammunition – Don’t waste it!” poster is a U.S. World War 1 poster designed by John E. Sheridan. The poster was designed to encourage those at home to save food. Like any resource, food was scarce in the United States during the war. The authorities wanted to ensure that food was not wasted as it was needed for those on the frontline. Even with a dark background, the poster is vibrant and draws attention to the fresh produce, which is the focal point of the artwork.
The poster depicts home grown food which could have easily come from a Victory Garden waiting to be used. In the background, we can see the U.S. troops on the frontline. The poster makes the connection between the food and the U.S. soldiers on the frontline.
The designer John E. Sheridan published numerous posters during World War 1. Perhaps the most famous of these was the “Hey Fellows” poster. Sheridan was a graphic designer who played a key role in designing posters during World War 1.
