The “If you want to fight – Join the Marines” poster is another of a series of World War 1 U.S Marine Corps Recruitment Posters. This poster features the “Christy Girl” in marine corps clothing, the Christy Girl was a character created by Howard Chandler Christy who embodied feminine attractiveness.
The poster was designed to encourage young men to join the marine corps, it uses the “Christy Girls” femininity and attractiveness to get the attention of the viewer, we see her in the foreground looking at the potential marine corps recruit, she is wearing a marine corps uniform and there is a trench warfare scene in the background.
The U.S. was a late entrant into World War 1, it wasn’t until 2 years after the sinking of the Lusitania that Woodrow Wilson relented and started sending troops to the front line. There was a heavy recruitment drive put in place to recruit men to go to the frontline. The marine corps played a huge part in the Battle of Belleau Wood where they won notoriety amongst the German soldiers for the ferocity and marksmanship. Although, they did lose 1,811 men during the battle.
