This “You Are Needed Now!” image is a rare Canadian Propaganda Poster from World War II.
The image depicts a fresh-faced soldier in traditional Canadian uniform. He is waving his troops forward. There is an air of optimism and confidence to this poster. The warm glow of the red background is both comforting and re-assuring.
The headline on this poster reads “You Are Needed Now!”. And in smaller writing, the subtitle reads “Step up and step out…in a uniform!”.
The lower section states “Apply to District Recruiting Office, C.N.R. Ticket Office, 93 Sparks Street.” Sparks Street is an area in Ottawa. The building still exists today.
Canada became involved in the second World War when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. It was the first of the Americas to be involved in the war. As is well known, her neighbor the USA later became involved after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Canada garnered support and finance through a successful propaganda campaign, which included an event called If Day. If Day was a simulated Nazi attack on the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
This poster is typical of the propaganda material used by Canada during this period.
