The “Nurses are needed now! Army nurse corps” was a recruitment poster focused towards recruiting women during World War 2. Nurses were extremely important part of the war effort, they treated the wounded on the frontline.
It is estimated that nearly 59,000 nurses served in the Army Nurse corps during World War 2. They worked close to the frontline ,were often caught in combat and found themselves in extremely dangerous situations.
Huge recruitment efforts were put in place to build up the nursing ranks right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and throughout the war. The “Nurses are needed now! Army nurse corps” was one of those posters that was used to recruit those at home to join the efforts.
This propaganda poster focuses on a stern, but beautiful nurse who stands in white in front of a dark background. The woman is admirable as she is both beautiful and willing to take on the difficult challenges faced by war nurses. In the background a red cross army vehicle is seen, it has what looks like flames coming out of it. This signifies the danger this woman faces.
Although the majority of posters were focused towards recruiting soldiers this is a rare exception which focuses on women. The posters appeals to the patriotism of the U.S public while also playing on the sense of adventure that must have been felt by many young women at the time.
