The U.S. Navy – “Here he is, sir” – We need him and you too! Navy Recruiting Station propaganda poster was used during World War 1 to recruit young men to join the Navy.
The poster depicts a young man with his mother handing him over to Uncle Sam to join the Navy. Uncle Sam replies that she is needed as well. This poster and the image shows that they are not just recruiting young men, but also woman to help with the war effort. Uncle Sam is seeing shaking the hand of the woman who is holding the hand of her son. In the distant background we sea and battle ships.
The poster was designed by Charles Dana Gibson and was published between 1914 and 1918, he was a well known graphic artist at the time and is best known for his Gibson Girl character.
