The “You can’t afford to miss either! Buy bonds every payday” poster was used in the U.S.A during World War 2. It was designed to encourage those at home to regularly buy war bonds on each and every payday, rather than just buying them occasionally.
War bonds were extremely important part of the war effort as they helped to fund to purchase of weapons and supplies on the frontline. The war effort cost over $300 billion and this money needed to come from somewhere. Politicians debated raising taxes, but war bonds had worked previously both in the U.S. and overseas and allowed those at home to help in a manner that was their choice rather than something that was imposed on them.
This poster links the purchase of these war bonds with the work of the military on the frontline. In this image we see a pilot shooting with the caption “You can’t afford to miss either!”, this makes the link between the pilot missing and those at home missing the opportunity to buy bonds.
