The “1937 El analfabetismo ciega el espiritu Soldado Instruyete” poster is a Republican Spanish Civil War Poster designed to encourage education amongst soldiers. The exact translation means “Illiteracy blinds the spirit of the soldier”.
Many of the peasants who fought on the Republican side were farm workers who were not previously educated. They were fighting for a leftist cause of equality of opportunities, labour rights and land which was granted to them by the Republicans. The poster “Campesino Defiende Con Armas Al Gobierno Que Te Dio La Tierra” overtly states this by declaring “Countryman defend with arms the land the government gave to you”.
Franco’s army in contrast was primarily made up of those on the right who were well educated and generally from wealthier backgrounds. Both sides of the conflict used propaganda posters to convert the people to their causes.
